Our Chapter History
The Marquis de La Fayette Chapter headquartered in Fayetteville began with an organizational meeting at the Fayette County Library on January 22, 2002. The Georgia Society’s Board of Managers granted a petition for a charter on July 13, 2002. The chapter was named for the Marquis de La Fayette. Our Charter Banquet was held on August 10, 2002, the same date that La Fayette joined the forces of General George Washington’s Army.
The Chapter has held regular monthly meetings since its organizational meeting.
The Chapter has become very active in nearly all of the SAR programs. The Chapter has won awards from both the Georgia Society and the National Society each year.
The Chapter includes members from Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry and South Fulton Counties. The Chapter serves as a very active force for promoting patriotism in Atlanta’s "Southern Crescent".
Our Chapter actively participates in several parades each year with our very own float. We have formed a local color guard and our members belong to the Georgia Society’s Color Guard and also the Col. Elijah Clarke Militia detachment of the Georgia Society. We have appeared annually in parades across the "Southern Crescent" from town festivals to 4th of July and Christmas parades. Special appearances have included the annual Veteran’s Day parade in Atlanta and the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl Parade.
The Chapter has worked cooperatively with our fellow patriotic organizations, including the five DAR chapters in our area as well as the two CAR societies in our area. Our members have served in a number of state and national offices in the SAR as well as several state and national committees.
Our other activities include, marking graves of patriots, working with our partners in patriotism the American Legion as well as other veterans groups, holding other patriotic observances, our annual "Let Freedom Ring" ceremony held on the 4th of July at the old Fayette County Courthouse, recognizing Eagle Scouts, Public Safety personnel including Emergency Servicemen, Firemen and Law Enforcement in our area, and local J.R.O.T.C. cadets.
The Chapter sponsors poster, essay and oration contests for area students as well as recognizing those who properly display the American Flag. One of the Chapter’s biggest projects is to assist hospitalized and elderly veterans in our area and those at the VA Hospital in Decatur.
We welcome persons interested in joining our ranks as well as transfers of those compatriots who have moved up from Children of the Revolution or relocated to our area in one of the finest chapters in the entire country.
