Living History School Visits
In conjunction with the American Heritage Foundation, the SAR promotes and provides curriculum materials to local schools. These materials provide lesson plans and other practical exercises, which focus on developing an understanding and teaching of our nation’s factual and philosophical heritage to promote freedom, unity, progress and responsibility among our students and citizens.
Our SAR chapter, along with members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, present a Colonial/Rev War living history program. We visit 4th and 8th grade classes in area schools and talk about what life was like during the Colonial Period and Revolutionary War. We display period artifacts that we use and let the children look at them without touching.
Our classroom visitors often portray in costume a Militia Man and a common store keeper, a farmer, a Continental Soldier, and a house keeper. We talk about the life of the boys and girls and talk about the games youth played in the colonial period. We do not talk about battles, however we do ask the students some questions about the history of the period. We also give out Continental money to the winners from the questions we ask.
Our chapter also gives a resource CD to the teachers for use in the class room and to incorporate into instruction. Our goal is to bring living history into the class room.
