Veterans Valentines created by a school class for distribution by the MDL Chapter at the VA Medical Center

Veterans Committee Activities:

  • Support of the VA Medical Center (VAMC) at Decatur, GA.

  • Attendance at events which honor veterans, such as funerals, SAR/DAR Revolutionary War soldier grave markings and other ceremonies conducted by other patriotic organizations.

  • Visits and/or assistance to hospitalized, ill, homebound or disabled veterans.

Three Christmas trees were decorated by DAR and SAR members at the Veterans' Hospital in Decatur recently, along with Christmas sock gifts and cards being delivered.   Personal items and magazines are donated throughout the year to the VA Hospital in Decatur by DAR and SAR.  Daughters and Sons of the American Revolution have honored and served Veterans since the organizations began including assisting veterans in their communities, hospitalized veterans as well as military serving around the world.

Veterans Committee Programs:

  • Membership on the VA Hospital's VAVS (Veterans Administration Voluntary Services) Committee and attendance at its quarterly meetings

  • Participation in the National Salute for Hospitalized Veterans (Feb 14th).  Distribute Valentines at the VAMC to patients and their familes.

  • Sponsorship of individuals for the VAMC's Summer Student Program.

  • Provide donations for Thanksgiving and Holiday Food Certificates for veterans selected by the VAMC.

  • Provide and decorate 5 holiday trees at the VAMC.

  • Prepare 25 or more "sock gifts" for the VAVS Stocking Distribution in December.  Each "sock gift" contains about 20 small items donated by Chapter members in October and November.

  • Year round provide books, magazines, toiletries and other comfort items for patients at the VAMC.

Awards and Recognitions:

  • USS Stark Memorial Award.  A SAR award to Chapters based upon the Chapter's level of participation in the support of Veterans and Veterans' programs. The Veterans Committee assembles data and prepares the Chapter's report for submission to the Georgia Society SAR. 

  • Services to Veterans Medal.  A Chapter level award for individual contributions to Veterans and Veterans' programs.  Reviews input from individuals and approves Chapter level award of the medal.
